Who says SEO is dead?
Who says SEO is dead? Six kinds of people, and only one of them is making a forecast. The other five are reporting a death that happened somewhere else, which is why this office files them under six manners of death.
- The patch casualty. Their site lost traffic in a Google update, so they announced a funeral for everyone. Skill issue
- The nerfed build. Their trick stopped working, like keyword stuffing after Penguin, and they took it personally. Nerfed
- The rage quitter. Expected rankings by month three and posted the obituary in month four. Rage quit
- The merchant. Says SEO is dead, or “dead as we know it,” then sells you the replacement. Sales pitch
- The clickbaiter. Knows “SEO Is Dead” gets clicks, then ranks the headline on Google. With SEO. Clickbait (ranked)
- The prophet. Gave the end of search a date. The date passed. Expired
Is SEO dead or just changing?
Is SEO dead or just changing? Changing, and some of the change hurts. SparkToro found that 68% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from under half in 2019 (measured with different panels, so read it as a direction).
Searches did not shrink. Google said in May 2026 that queries had reached an all-time high, and its search revenue grew 17% in the second quarter (Alphabet). More searches, fewer clicks per search: whatever clicks are left go to whoever still ranks. That is a harder game. It is not a funeral, and the vital signs say the same.
Is SEO dead because of AI?
Is SEO dead because of AI? Google’s own guide to AI search asks “Is SEO still relevant for generative AI search?” and answers “In short, yes!” The reason it gives: its AI features are rooted in the same core ranking and quality systems as Search.
The same guide says many AEO and GEO “hacks” aren’t effective, and that Google Search ignores llms.txt files. AI chatbots sent 0.28% of all web traffic in March 2026, by Ahrefs’ count. More in what AI actually changed.
How many times has SEO been declared dead?
How many times has SEO been declared dead? More times than anyone can count, though Ahrefs tried: 3,367 uses of “SEO is dead” between June 2016 and September 2020, about 66 a month. The first known obituary came in November 1997, the same year the phrase “search engine optimization” came into use.
Google’s Gary Illyes summed up the record in 2024: by the obituaries’ own count, SEO had been dying since about 2003. “Hell of a slow death,” he wrote. Some tactics really did die, and those are filed under confirmed deaths.
The “SEO is dead” experiment
This site is the “SEO is dead” experiment: a site called seoisdead.wiki, built to rank on Google for “is SEO dead” with nothing but SEO. If it ranks, its own name is wrong.
Page one already makes the point. On October 11, 2026, Forbes’ “SEO Is Dead: 3 Strategies To Win In The Age Of AI Search” ranked second on Google in the US for “is seo dead,” and Inc.’s “SEO Is Dead, According to Google” ranked fourth. They got there with SEO.
SEO is dead FAQ
The SEO is dead FAQ covers what people ask this office most.
- Is SEO dead in 2026?
- SEO is not dead in 2026. Google said in May 2026 that queries had reached an all-time high, and its guide to AI search says the best practices for SEO “continue to be relevant.” What fell is the share of searches that end in a click.
- Will AI replace SEO?
- AI will not replace SEO on Google, because Google’s AI features draw on its Search index and its core ranking and quality systems, according to Google’s own guide. A page still has to be crawled, indexed and ranked to be found.
- Is GEO replacing SEO?
- GEO is not replacing SEO on Google. Google’s guide calls AEO and GEO common terms online, says many of the “hacks” sold under those names aren’t effective, and tells site owners to prioritize effective SEO.
- Why do people keep saying SEO is dead?
- People keep saying SEO is dead because their own site, tactic or product just died, or because the headline gets clicks. Only forecasters are guessing, and their dates keep passing.
- When was SEO first declared dead?
- SEO was first declared dead in November 1997, when a post to the Online Advertising Discussion List called search engines a “dead-end technology.” The phrase “search engine optimization” had come into use earlier that year.
- Is SEO still worth it?
- SEO is still worth it wherever people search for what you sell, and Google handles more than 5 trillion searches a year. Expect fewer clicks per search than in 2019, and judge SEO by the clicks and calls you win.
